Fall is undoubtedly one of the most magical times of the year to get out and explore new places and activities. Southern Ontario is one of the perfect places to do just that, especially during the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Not only will you enjoy some of Canada’s most stunning forests as they transition into breathtaking canvasses of reds, yellows, oranges, and browns, as well as the colourful fall flowers and pumpkins that adorn properties throughout the region, but there are also all kinds of great events to attend at this time of year.
Autumn in Southern Ontario is filled with fun activities for everyone. These activities peak during the Thanksgiving long weekend, when everyone is out having fun and taking in all that this beautiful region has to offer.
Are you looking for something different to do this Thanksgiving holiday? If so, get the family all together, put on your favourite fall sweater, and hop in the car for a road trip to some of Ontario’s best attractions.
What are some of the most fun activities that you can do this Thanksgiving?
There is certainly no shortage of options for things to do during the Thanksgiving holiday, especially if you are fortunate enough to be in Southern Ontario, where the fall season brings out the best in this region.
There is plenty to do and see along the Niagara Escarpment all year round, but perhaps the most optimal time to visit this quaint and scenic part of the country is when Thanksgiving is nearing.
The following are some of the best ways that you can have an unforgettable Thanksgiving long weekend in this region this year:
1. Take a road trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake
For a charming experience this Thanksgiving, you might like this charming town that is full of history, 19th-century homes and buildings, incredible shopping and dining experiences, art galleries, and scenic hiking areas.
Located on the shores of Lake Ontario and in the centre of Ontario wine country, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a wonderful place to explore, especially in the fall when remarkable autumn colours are on full display. When you visit, you can enjoy both some award-winning local wines and freshly grown fruits and vegetables.
2. Attend the Ball’s Falls Thanksgiving Festival
One of the most long-standing Thanksgiving traditions in Southern Ontario is attending some of the many Fall festivals that are held annually in the region. One of the best festivals that you can enjoy at this time of year is the Ball’s Falls Thanksgiving Festival.
This year will be the 49th time this amazing event has been hosted, and it will feature upwards of 150 in-person artisan vendors along with delicious foods, craft beverages and wines, local farmers’ market vendors, and more. There is something for everyone at this holiday festival, as you can also enjoy live music performances, historical demonstrations, and heritage tours.
3. Enjoy an apple orchard
What better way to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday than to pick some fresh and delicious locally-grown fruit at a beautiful and fun apple orchard? At The Apple Orchard in Hamilton, Ontario, you can pick your own apples, pears, sunflowers, pumpkins, and squashes.
While you are at it, you and your family can enjoy a wagon ride through the scenic fields of this orchard. Or, if you prefer, you can walk along an equally beautiful path through the orchard and take in an amazing view of its rolling hills.
If you have young children, there is also a range of farm animals on-site for you and your kids to interact with, or you can enjoy the corn pit play area or the hay jump. After endless hours of fun, you can go home with some of the tastiest local produce that you have ever tried!
4. Test your navigational skills in a corn maze
Do you think you could solve a massive, human-sized puzzle carved into 20 acres of 12-foot-tall corn stalks? If so, and you are up for the challenge, the Hanes Corn Maze, which is being set up for the 23rd year in a row, may be the perfect place to visit this Thanksgiving long weekend.
You must follow a map that leads to checkpoints, discover and solve clues, and then find your way out of the maze to receive a prize. From start to finish, the maze could take 1–2 hours to complete, so make sure you come prepared.
5. Go on a safari adventure
While a safari may not be the first activity that comes to mind when you think of Southern Ontario, at African Lion Safari in Hamilton, it is possible to drive through wild game reserves in the comfort of your own vehicle.
As you drive along roughly nine kilometers of trails, you will get closer than you ever thought possible to incredible animal species from all over the world. In fact, the park is home to more than 1,000 birds and animals.
It may not be a very traditional way to spend Thanksgiving, but it is definitely one of the highlights of this region and could be a fun and different way to celebrate the holiday with your family this year.
